Look around your home! What everyday items could be combined to create the fabric or structure for your fashion masterpiece?
In the past, imaginative "upcycling fashionistas" have transformed unexpected materials into impressive designs, using everyday items such as potato chip bags, newspapers, old books, magazines, and even chainmail made from crushed aluminum cans, pull tabs, and bottle caps. Think outside the box! Materials that might otherwise end up in the trash could become the centerpiece of your next creation. Need some inspiration? Turning Something Old into Something New
Not all recycled fashion has to start with trash. Sometimes, the perfect material is already sitting in your closet!
Consider giving unwanted fabrics and clothing a new purpose. Could an old, worn-out T-shirt become part of a completely different outfit? Could unused bedsheets be transformed into a beautiful dress? What about turning those extra reusable shopping bags into a stylish accessory?
Before purchasing new materials, take a look at what you already have. You might be surprised by how much potential is hiding in your home!
We’re Dyeing to See Someone Try It
Found the perfect fabric, but the color isn't quite right? Why not experiment with giving it a new look?
While traditional fabric dyes are always an option, you can take your sustainable fashion creation a step further by exploring natural dyes made from everyday food scraps. Did you know that materials such as onion skins, avocado pits, and certain fruits and vegetables can be used to create natural fabric dyes? Results vary depending on the material and fabric, but experimenting is part of the fun!

It’s More About the Journey than the Destination!
Be sure to document what you did. At the very least, please let us know what you started with and what you turned it into. Remember, the judges for the competition aren’t from the fashion industry, they are sustainability professionals, so what materials you used and how you used them will be more important to them than the aesthetic of the piece. The more imaginative you are with preparing your piece, the better!
Pictures and short videos showing the process are welcome but aren’t required. So, if you want to document how you did it, we would be happy to see it!
