History
Victorville was incorporated on September 21, 1962, with a population of just over 8,100 and an area of 9.7 square miles. Its history dates back to 1885, when the community was named “Victor” after Jacob Nash Victor, a superintendent for the California Southern Railroad. In 1901, the name officially changed to “Victorville” to avoid confusion with Victor, Colorado.

The arrival of U.S. Route 66 in 1926 helped shape Victorville’s growth, bringing travelers through Seventh Street and D Street and establishing Old Town as a popular destination for shops, diners, and roadside stops. Following the completion of Interstate 15 in 1966, Route 66 traffic declined, impacting Old Town’s activity.
Today, the City is committed to revitalizing Old Town, celebrating its historic Route 66 roots, preserving its unique character, and creating a vibrant destination for residents and visitors.
