On March 17, 2025, our community suffered a profound loss when Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., a sheriff’s deputy with the Victorville Police Department, was killed in the line of duty. Tragically, Deputy Cuevas (36) was involved in a fatal collision during a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle.

Deputy Cuevas was a six-year veteran of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. He served the community of Victorville for three years following earlier service in Upland.
He graduated from Carter High School in Rialto and lived in Fontana. He is survived by his wife and two small children.

Hector’s dedication extended beyond the badge. He was an active member of his church and a beloved football coach in Rialto, having mentored young athletes at Carter High School. He also played for the San Bernardino Spartans, a team of local law enforcement personnel and firefighters. Known affectionately as “Coach Hector,” he made a lasting impact on and off the field. At the Spartan’s first game following his passing, the team took the field with only ten players, leaving Hector’s position open in silent tribute. His jersey was displayed proudly on the sidelines as teammates, friends, and family honored his memory. The City of Victorville is forever grateful to Deputy Cuevas for his dedicated service to our community and his sacrifice.
