Celebrate 100 Years of the Victorville Fire Department

VICTORVILLE, Calif. — The Victorville Fire Department turned 100 this year, and the community is invited to join in a celebration of the department’s rich history of service excellence, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Victorville Fire Museum, 15620 8th Street.

The celebration will feature a ceremony at 9 a.m. followed by apparatus displays, skills demonstrations, and tours of the Victorville Fire Museum. This event is free and open to the public.

“I thank our Victorville firefighters for their dedicated service. Placing oneself in harm’s way to help another is a special calling that puts our firefighters in our debt,” said Victorville Mayor Liz Becerra. “We are very excited to celebrate 100 years of Victorville Fire with our community.”

The Victorville Fire Department began as a fully-volunteer fire department in 1926 with one fire station. Since then, Victorville Fire has grown into an all-hazard/all-risk fire department with five fire stations serving nearly 142,000 residents; and it’s one of the busiest fire departments in the county with more than 25,000 calls for service each year.

The history of the Victorville Fire Department dates to 1926 when the Victorville County Fire Protection District was established. In 1930, the Victorville Volunteer Fire Department was established. A major milestone came in 1972 when Victorville hired its first full-time Fire Chief, marking the beginning of a modern professional fire department.

In 1976, approximately 14 years after Victorville was incorporated, control of the Victorville Fire Protection District was assumed by the City of Victorville. In 2008, the City contracted fire, EMS, and rescue services with the San Bernardino County Fire District.

A decade later, City leaders voted to once again establish an independent, municipal fire department. In 2019, the Victorville Fire Department returned to a City-operated agency.

In the past five years, the City of Victorville has invested in significant expansions to fire and emergency medical service for its growing community with revenue generated by Measure P, the one-cent-sales tax approved by the Victorville voters in 2020.

This includes the opening of Fire Station 315, the addition of more than 20 firefighters, and much-needed apparatus including new engines, tiller, water tender, and transport capable squads.

Eighth Street will be closed from D Street to B Street for the Victorville Fire Centennial Celebration. Attendees can travel Hesperia Road and 7th Street into Old Town for the event. Parking is available on side streets.
