The City’s Street Sweeping program is designed to remove dirt and debris from the streets, creating a healthy, safe, and visually appealing environment for the citizens of Victorville.  This program also helps prevent roadside debris from entering the storm drain system, which can lead to water pollution and an increased risk of flooding.

Residents can contribute to reducing water pollution by disposing of yard waste in the green bin and avoiding the overwatering of gardens and lawns. Excessive watering can wash pollutants, including fertilizers and pesticides, into the streets and storm drains.  It is also essential to remember that deliberately washing, sweeping, or blowing any debris into the street is illegal and may result in fines or other penalties.

Street sweeping duties include cleaning and maintaining City streets and rights of way. Personnel also respond to emergency calls for cleanup after traffic accidents, material spills, and for special events hosted by the City.

Street sweepers operate at speeds of four to seven miles per hour, depending on the amount of debris that needs to be cleared.  The collected refuse is stockpiled, dried, and then screened with a front-end loader and shaker screen, which separates trash from the sweepings.  The trash is disposed of responsibly, while the sifted sand is recycled for future use, minimizing the need for new materials and reducing environmental impact.
