FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 13, 2019
VICTORVILLE, Calif. – Today, the City of Victorville announced that its Fire Department was awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security in the amount of $310,633 to fund the purchase of essential safety equipment.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program provides federal funding to help fire departments obtain necessary equipment to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and fire-related hazards.
The Victorville Fire Department will use the grant award to purchase thermal imaging cameras, rescue equipment, an air compressor/filling station, respiratory fit tester and fire hose. The Department will also purchase personal protective equipment washers. These washers will provide Victorville Fire Personnel the ability to wash and sanitize their personal protective equipment, which is crucial to protecting their well-being by reducing cancer risk.
“We are proud of our first responders and thankful for the dedicated service our fire personnel provide to Victorville. This grant will help our local firefighters provide the highest level of public safety service possible,” said Victorville Mayor, Gloria Garcia.
The history of the Victorville Fire Department dates back to 1926 when the Victorville County Fire Protection District was established. In 1930, the Victorville Volunteer Fire Department was established. In 1976, approximately 14 years after Victorville was incorporated, control of the Victorville Fire Protection District was assumed by the City of Victorville. In March 2019, the City of Victorville re-established its Fire Department after contracting the fire services for 10 years. The Victorville Fire Department is staffed with 60 personnel, and the department is led by Fire Chief Greg Benson.
