Winter Tips

  • gardeningCheck your household pipes, exposed irrigation pipes, and outside faucets to make sure they have adequate insulation.
  • Wrap insulating tape around pipes in unheated areas such as garages.
  • Set heater thermostats to low during vacations instead of shutting them off.
  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses to prevent bursting either the hose or the faucet.
  • Decrease your watering schedule, and water lawns and landscaping between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to save water and to prevent freezing water on sidewalks and streets.
  • Know where you home's water shut-off valve is located.
  • Keep cabinet doors under sinks open, allowing the warm air inside the house to circulate and warm exposed pipes.
  • If pipes freeze, warm them GRADUALLY with a hair dryer or space heater.
Pipes that warm too fast can break.
