Public Works Day 2016 was an Amazing success! 340 fourth grade students of the Victor Valley Elementary School District (VESD) attended the event on Thursday, May 19, 2016. During the event, students visited Ten Public Works stations to learn about VMUS, the vactor truck, CCTV van, street sweeper, fleet, crack seal/concrete, graffiti, recycling, water quality, and traffic signals. The information provided showcased this year’s theme, “Public Works, Always There,” and broadened student’s civic knowledge and understanding of the Public Works infrastructure. Each Public Works station presenter reinforced using VESD’s career curriculum or 21st Century Skills in their presentations. 21st Century skills are the “super skills” of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity needed for future career success.
We would like to thank Doug Robertson, Keith Metzler, Doug Mathews, and Brian Gengler for attending! Public Works would also like to thank Doug Robertson for presenting the awards for the group game competition winners’.
Each student subsequently submitted an essay about their experience at Public Works Day, and the top three essay winners attended the City of Victorville Council Meeting on June 7th to be recognized and receive an award.
